A Resolution to … Force a Re-think
on “Road Diets” – 11th street lane reduction
1. Whereas, This plan employs significant lane reductions using "bikeway"/“road diet”- strategy that has generated pushback and shown to increase accidents to pedestrians/cyclists in other cities which resulted in several projects reversed;
2. Whereas, The Federal government has published a list of alternative tools (over two dozen) to enhance road safety, such as speed humps, flashing lights, and rumble strips;
3. Whereas, The city of Houston has adopted a social engineering scheme to redesign numerous thoroughfares to reduce the number of lanes in a campaign to alter the driving behavior of Houstonians, convert motorists to bike users all under a questionable claim of enhanced safety to reduce non-fatal auto crashes; be it
RESOLVED, That the Mayor and Houston City Council are urged to direct the Planning Department to revisit the bikeway and “Road Diet” programs in light of our concerns about redesigning 11th and other streets slated for reduced capacity which will increase congestion, increase safety concerns on interior streets putting children, pedestrians and cyclists at risk and the potential for a colossal waste of tax dollars if a decision is later made to undo these changes, and
RESOLVED, the planning department is urged to prepare alternative plans for residents of all neighbors scheduled for redesign that look at the full menu of options that can improve safety with minimal cost and disruption to the economy.
