Why this petition matters

Started by Ben Sayers

I am a resident of Malden Rushett, who crosses the A243 on a daily basis. The current crossing point is not wide enough for a bike to fit lengthways and the pavement is not wide enough for a parent and child to walk side-by-side. This road is one of the main routes into London with high traffic volume making it extremely dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

The closest safe crossing point is over a mile away which is impractical especially in emergency situations or during bad weather. Furthermore, there are two bus stops without any safe means to cross once alighted. This puts public transport users at risk every day.

The proposed new light controlled crossing point is ideally located to link Ashtead Common (an area of 495 acres) to Prince's Coverts (864 acres) a popular and advertised walking route. It will also aide the copious bike commuters, as the crossing links Epsom and Ashtead to neighbouring regions Oxshott, Cobham, and Esher.

According to Department for Transport statistics, pedestrian fatalities in the UK have risen by 3% from 2018-2019 (source: Department for Transport). We cannot wait until this statistic includes someone from our community before we act.

We urge local authorities to install a safe crossing point near The Star Pub on A243 as soon as possible. This will not only ensure safety but also encourage more people to walk or cycle thereby reducing carbon emissions in our area and boosting the accessibility of the wonderful green belt land for all to enjoy.

Please sign this petition if you agree that safety should be prioritised.

Let's make our roads safer together and save lives!
