Marcus Garvey galvanized a movement of millions spanning the globe. For his efforts, he was a target of the United States government. In 1922, Garvey was arrested and charged with mail fraud. It was widely known to be trumped-up charges. But those charges led to a conviction and a five-year jail sentence. 

In 1925, a petition was circulated to free Garvey. It got 70,000 signatures, which was enough to pressure President Calvin Coolidge to commute Garvey’s sentence. Coolidge added deportation as a stipulation. Garvey returned to Jamaica, but his name was forever tarnished.
