Supporting Local Farms
Petition to Minister of Agriculture André Lamontagne
Dear Minister of Agriculture André Lamontagne
Synthetic nitrogen fertilizers release nitrous oxide which is a greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere, thus contributing to climate change by warming earth. Therefore, a great solution to climate change would be for Quebec citizens to eat more organic produce, However, “Research suggests organic foods are between 20% and 60% more expensive than their non-organic counterparts” (Canadian Grocer, 2018).
We, the undersigned residents of Quebec and supporters of local organic farming products, are concerned about sustainable agriculture and nutrient management in our communities. We urge the province to take action to support local organic farms and promote responsible nutrient practices, which will hopefully drive down organic food prices. We propose
implementing a nutrient management program at Macdonald farm of McGill in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, where our future farmers learn the ropes, or Morgan’s Farm, near Mont Tremblant in collaboration with local experts like the IRDA to guide responsible fertilizer use and soil conservation. Raising money for the Research And Development Institute For The Agri-Environment (IRDA) is a great way to support Quebec’s research for BIO approaches.
Additionally, a local food procurement policy in Montreal prioritizing purchases from local farmers could boost the economy and reduce food transportation emissions. As BIO goods remain more expensive, the nutrient management program could help these local farmers save money, reducing organic food prices long-term.
To add, educational programs for citizens on sustainable farming and food literacy would empower residents to make more informed choices.
We appreciate your consideration of these proposals,
Sincerely,
Emile Beaudoin and Rathaan Rajaratnam.
