Why this petition matters

Started by Corporate Junky

The recently released Netflix documentary, Afrobeats: The Backstory produced by Ayo Shonaiya, made some inflammatory and unfounded statements that are damaging and hurtful, not to mention robs over 200 million Nigerians of their legacy. We are petitioning that Shonaiya's statement: "the foundation of Afrobeat is from Ghana" made in episode 12 be pulled down or retracted on Netflix as this is false and offensive to the legacy of both Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti, founder of Afrobeat, and millions of Nigerians.

This statement by Mr. Shonaiya was both careless and irresponsible as he failed to consider how it would affect the millions of Nigerians whose legacies are tied to Afrobeat(s). There is no evidence to back this false statement by Mr. Shonaiya. But there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that the formation of Afrobeat was made in Nigeria in the 60s and 70s by Fela Kuti--who was a Nigerian. We believe Mr. Shonaiya may have erred on this matter. We are asking that this mistake be corrected by Netflix ASAP.
