Why this petition matters

Started by Scotland McCarthy

The newt and salamander hobby went under an immense change in January of 2016, when a ban was put in place, by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife, banning 201 species of newt and salamander and 20 Genus'. The goal of this petition is for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife to allow the importation of a clean newt or salamander. A clean newt or salamander would be a specimen swabbed and tested for Bsal (Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans) and testing negative for that, as well as any other disease needed for allowing the newt to be cleared and deemed clean to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife. This will allow the newt and salamander hobby to import new animals, while immensely lowering smuggling rates and chances of Bsal entering the US through illegal admission. With the help of organizations and labs funded to test for Bsal, and other amphibian diseases, such as the University of Tennesee, and PIJAC, helping grant a complete certification of a clean swabbed specimen for the US FWS.
