Petition the NRL's 17th franchise, 'The Dolphins' to include a geographical name
Why this petition matters
'The Dolphins' have continued its amateurish refusal to add a geographical identity to their name which has caused major public backlash from NRL fans, including their own.
Their reasoning behind not including a geographical identity is to not alienate anyone. But their attempt to please everyone, they have alienated everyone, especially their local supporters.
A geographical name is how supporters identify with a club. The Dolphins have ignored the plea from the Mayor of Moreton Bay for the club to be named the Moreton Bay Dolphins, despite taking millions of dollars from Moreton Bay regional council over the years.
Moreton Bay is the region which Redcliffe is located, a region that intertwines the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane communities, where the clubs wants to expand its footprint.
The Dolphins business goal is to be a "national brand" which is reasonable, but at the expense of the people of Moreton Bay. Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Lakers, Dallas Cowboys are all global brands with a geographical identity. There is no reason why The Dolphins can't do the same.
Petition the NRL's 17th franchise to change their name to the 'Moreton Bay Dolphins' or other suggested geographical names such as 'North Brisbane', 'Sunshine State' etc or keep 'Redcliffe', and give the deserving local community a team that is truly their own.
