Why this petition matters

Started by G G

There are certain resources that everyone should be able to enjoy. The beaches and natural beauty of Ontario's Tiny Township  are one of those natural wonders that should be shared.

Many cottage owners in Tiny Township allow others to enjoy the natural wonders of Ontario by offering their cottage for rent via home sharing platforms such as AirBnB or VRBO.

Some residents in Tiny believe that this area of paradise is just for them. On August 11, Tiny Township  passed a by-law that effectively eliminates the ability for most cottage owners to offer their cottages for others to enjoy.

We, a group of responsible short-term rental (STR) owners, do not agree!

We are a group that is committed to responsible and respectful renters to responsibly enjoy our natural wonders.

We welcome sensible and enforceable regulations to ensure rights of everyone are respected, but reject any attempt to outright (or effectively) ban the use of our natural beauty by virtue of short-term rental stays for all but those who can afford to live there.

By signing this petition you are supporting responsible short term rentals in Tiny, by telling the Township administrators that the by-law as it stands now is too restrictive and needs to be rewritten.

We feel that the bylaw has been clearly designed to eliminate short-term rentals by making it extremely onerous, if not impossible for hosts to comply.

Onerous, due to high cost of licensing, multiple expensive and unnecessary inspections and more. There is sufficient regulation that deals with fire, safety and noise prevention and the current bylaw is largely unnecessary.

Impossible, because, for example, it requires owners to break privacy laws by divulging private information of renters (names, addresses and phone numbers) to township administration on yearly basis or whenever requested. That is just one example.

Lastly,

We feel that the people who want to ban rentals in Tiny are reinforcing NIMBYism (by preventing people from visiting), some by racism (by preventing minorities from accessing beaches), and privilege (by ignoring that many cottage owners can't afford their properties without covering some expenses). This is simply wrong in this day and age.
