Why this petition matters

Started by Robert Crawford

On 13 September 2021 at 18:26, the ILLEGAL hunt (Also known as the Grindadráp) of a large pod of Dolphins began after being spotted by local hunters earlier on. Countless boats (Between 10-30) joined the hunt and the pod was driven past 5 hunting bays until they were forced ashore by the boats and jet ski’s to then be impaled with a sharp, razor like knife straight to the head. Sadly, due to there being no Sea Shepherd volunteers on the island at the time, this hunt was not recorded so the real suffering of these animals was not thoroughly covered, however from the videos themselves it's clear these animals are in hell. It pains me to say this, but sadly 1428 White Side Dolphins were massacred in the most brutal ways possible. It’s unclear how long this hunt took, however this Grindadráp sure has raised a lot of concern across the Faroe Islands.

It has later been announced that the hunt has been reported as ILLEGAL due to the hunt not being confirmed / approved by the district grindforeman; It was approved by someone who didn’t have the right to proceed. This person didn’t carry a thorough assessment as there were simply not enough men to handle the dolphins and this caused suffering to the 1428 poor souls who laid helpless on the bay they were then brutally murdered on.

That’s why we’re calling on (And quite literally begging) the Faroese Government to follow through with 3 key points - investigate, punish and end. We demand that the disaster that took place on 13/09/21 is investigated thoroughly by all relevant authorities to determine if the hunt was carried out as per your islands legislation and training. Although the slaughter of these animals doesn’t have an excuse, your information pages boast that these hunts are ‘sustainable’ and that no unnecessary suffering is caused. Apparently your training is thorough and hunters require a specially issued license, however after watching numerous grindadráp’s, I and others have sadly seen many poor souls suffer.

We demand you investigate the following : Who confirmed the hunt? What was the duration of the hunt? Why were all 1428 dolphins were killed? Why there were numerous lacerations on numerous dolphins and what caused this? Why and how did someone override the district grindforeman? And why did other hunters proceed with the hunt knowing that it was classed as ‘Illegal’? Following from these questions, we’d like to see justice served for the 1428 dolphins that were brutally murdered on 13/09/21 and the highest punishment for the complete destruction of a super pod of white side dolphins and that the person responsible for proceeding with the hunt and ALL hunters involved, including those that chased the pod to have their licenses permanenly revoked.

As Sea Shepherd's said, “Many years ago hunting for pilot whales was done out of necessity” and in these modern times, exporting food is easier than it’s ever been and the cruel acts that are inflicted upon such intelligent, much needed marine life is impacting your and our ocean more than we’ll ever know. This is why we’re calling on you to bring an end to such an old, medieval tradition that your island can let go without suffering of any kind. The resale of whale / dolphin meat is banned within your island, so this won’t affect your economy. For the sake of 'Taste' this culture can come to an end.  Embrace your oceans and substitute the hunting with watching instead. Sadly there are locals who share the same opinions as us and they would also like for this cruelty to stop, however they’re silenced by hostile men and women who shout, threaten and terrorise - so we’re calling on YOU the Faroese Government to take action and deal with this huge environmental issue.
