Why this petition matters

Started by Matan Davies

Dear Scarsdale Community:

Real financial literacy education is required in an increasingly complex world. Without this education, we will lack the skills we need to succeed. Please sign this petition to help make sure Scarsdale provides this education in high school next year.

We all need an education in areas such as credit cards, bank accounts, budgeting, investing, and even taxes. As students, we need this education now - not later when we are already in college or the working world. The course is long overdue.

Today, Scarsdale High School does not offer us this kind of education, even though we live in the financial capital of the world. Scarsdale Schools should be setting the standard in this area given the strength of our schools and community ties to the financial world.

The good news is that a new financial literacy elective course was proposed for next year by the school administration, and it would cover budgeting, taxes, basic investing, insurance, and debt management, as well as policy matters needed for a practical understanding of the modern economy.

Unfortunately, as of last week, this new course has been targeted to be deferred due to budget concerns. Please oppose the deferral of the class by signing this petition so that students are financially literate before entering college and the workforce.

The Board of Education will be meeting on the budget on March 25th, and I plan to present this petition to them at the meeting to make sure we have this class next year. The Board will make its decision on April 8th.  The time is now to act.
