Why this petition matters

Started by Julie Sullivan

We, the concerned citizens of Connecticut, urge the local authorities and decision-makers to reconsider the proposed plan of building an animal shelter adjacent to West Rock Ridge State Park in Hamden, CT.  We believe preserving the natural beauty and ecological integrity of this cherished park is of vital importance.

West Rock Ridge State Park is a unique natural treasure that provides countless benefits for both humans and wildlife.  It offers over 1,700 acres of diverse ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, rocky ridges and Lake Wintergreen.  This park serves as a vital habitat for numerous species of plants and animals, some of which are endangered or rare.

The proposed location for Hamden’s new animal shelter, 490 Main Street, consists of 12 acres of undeveloped woodlands surrounded on three sides by West Rock Ridge State Park.  These woodlands are the home, and source of food, for many species of wildlife found in the Park.  Damaging these woodlands by cutting down trees and building an animal shelter, driveway, and parking lot, would destroy an important natural habitat and risk disrupting the delicate ecological balance that exists within West Rock Ridge State Park.  The loss of this natural habitat, and the noise pollution from increased human activity will disturb wildlife behavior patterns and hinder their ability to find food or reproduce effectively.

Furthermore, the construction process itself will cause irreversible damage to the Park’s fragile ecosystems.  Excavation work may lead to soil erosion and sediment runoff into nearby streams or wetlands.  This contamination can harm aquatic life forms such as fish and amphibians.

Additionally, building an animal shelter adjacent to West Rock Ridge State Park could have adverse effects on the visitor experience.  Many people visit this park seeking respite from noisy urban environments.  The peace and tranquility of the Park and its surrounding woodlands is therefore a critical feature of the Park that contributes to the well-being of its visitors.  The presence of noise pollution generated by barking dogs or increased traffic may deter visitors who come here seeking peace and quietude.

We understand the importance of providing adequate care for animals in need; however, we firmly believe that alternative locations can be explored that do not compromise the integrity of West Rock Ridge State Park.  We encourage the authorities to consider other suitable areas where an animal shelter can be built without endangering a valuable natural resource.

We, the undersigned concerned citizens of Connecticut, request that you prioritize the preservation and protection of West Rock Ridge State Park by halting any plans to build an animal shelter adjacent to its boundaries.  Let us work together to find a more suitable location for this facility while ensuring the long-term sustainability and ecological health of our beloved state park.
