Why this petition matters

Started by Cx J

Our community is still dealing with the aftermath of the closure of Robert Bateman High School. The decision to close the school was a painful and frustrating experience for our community members, especially for those whose entire generations were raised in this area. Unfortunately, the new usage of the building comes at an even greater cost. Now, we face yet another threat - the proposed conversion of our beloved running track and field into a parking lot. This decision has caused distress, worry and frustration among our community members.

Our running track and field is more than just a piece of land; it's an integral part of our community. It's where we gather for sporting events, where our children learn to run and play, where we come to exercise, seek peace in nature, where friendships are forged and memories made. To pave over this space would not only be an affront to our past but also detrimental to our future.

The argument in favour of additional parking does not hold water in today's world. The future lies in mass public transit and ride-sharing services, not individual cars contributing to pollution and increased traffic congestion. In fact, according to Statistics Canada 2016 census data, Burlington has seen an increase in public transit usage by 7% since 2011 (source: Statistics Canada). This trend is expected to continue as more people become environmentally conscious. Parking requirements of yesterday should never dictate the world of tomorrow!

City guidelines are pushing for parking and green space changes with ZERO PUBLIC INPUT! This disregard for proper public engagement is a severe affront to our community. This track and field has been woven into our community's DNA for decades, and any modifications should involve our community's input from the get-go. Our green space is invaluable and deserves more than to be reduced to a parking space!

We urge those making these decisions to consider the long-term impacts on both the environment and community spirit before proceeding with any plans that would alter or destroy this treasured space.

Preserve our running track and field as it stands now! Sign this petition if you believe in protecting these communal spaces for present generations while planning sustainably for future ones.
