Islington Consultation deadline end date on 30 October 2022. Please help!
The Shaolin Temple UK is the only Shaolin Chan Buddism Temple in the UK, influencial community centre in islington, consecrated religious site and registered charity (charity registration number: 1057407). It was established to promote the study of Chan Buddhism Wisdom, Sitting Meditation, Qigong, Medicine, Gongfu, and has huge significance for an Chinese culture that has been flourishing for over 1500 years.
Founded in 1998 in North London by Grandmaster Shifu Shi Yanzi, the Temple is the only official emissary of the ancient Chinese Shaolin Temple here in the UK.
Today, the Temple is home to a vast community of students across Islington, London, and abroad. It welcomes all humans and is an inclusive, supportive and nurturing space that fosters a sense of belonging, a vital aspect of wellbeing for the mind, body and soul.
This jeopardises over 20 years of hard work and ignores entirely the sacred status of this consecrated Buddhist ground.
Built from scratch for and by the community, the site's many precious and unique features include:
- Sacred Shaolin hand painted giant murals teaching the journey to enlightenment.
- Courtyard with a beautiful waterfall and peaceful contemplation fish pond specifically created for mindfulness purposes.
- Kung fu training halls, a traditional Chinese dojo, a vital space for the community and students to sit and talk and learn about Buddhism.
- Meditation room and Buddhist prayer room, blessed by venerated monks making it a sacred site of worship.
The Shaolin Temple is not just a martial arts centre as categorised by the council.
It is a vibrant and much beloved community centre with deep roots. To move the Temple to another site would mean destroying the sacred grounds and putting an end to a vital legacy for preserving an ancient Chinese culture dating back 1500 years and lucky for Islington, residing in this leafy corner of London.
WE BELIEVE ISLINGTON COUNCIL'S PLAN TO REHOUSE THE SHAOLIN TEMPLE IS SACRILEGE. IT IS A PLACE OF NATIONAL HERITAGE AND DESERVES TO BE PRESERVED, TREATED AS A LISTED SITE OF CULTURAL IMPORTANCE.
This is a petition to fight for the Temple to remain. Please join our effort to reverse this decision by signing and sharing this petition with others. Help us to save the Shaolin Temple!
THANK YOU
