Why this petition matters

Started by Bruce Broderick

Our community suffers from needless and senseless noise pollution every hour of every day by the continual blasting of the tourist train horn at five  road intersections that are in close proximity to each other in residential neighborhoods. These horn blasts can occur any time of the day or night at the discretion of Mendocino Railway. During busy tourist times the horn is activated longer and louder to gain their attention and build excitement for the train ride. What occurs as a result of this noise polluting advertisement of the tourist attraction is that residents are placed in a continuous state of stress. Sleep is affected during late night runs and peaceful weekends are a thing of the past because of this behavior.

We, as residents of Fort Bragg, California, have the opportunity to put an end to this noise pollution. There are provisions in the railroad regulations called "A Quiet zone" where trains going at low speeds through residential areas can silence their horns when adequate crossing signals are present. That is the case here in Fort Bragg. There is a drop down gate and bell at every crossing in the town over the one eighth mile stretch of train track and five crossings that the train traverses multiple times a day, every day of the week. This equals 20 loud blasts of the horn over a minute or two every time the train goes by at 5 miles per hour assuring that everyone in town knows that the tourists have just gone by on their short but noisy ride.

Lets bring a sense peace back to our community. Help by signing this petition so we can bring this to our City Council and in turn go to the Department of Transportation to create a  much needed "Quiet Zone" in our community.

We, as residents deserve a say in how things are run in our community. Add your voice.
