Why this petition matters

Started by Lili Greer

My mother was a domestic violence victim for years before being murdered by her partner, Les Sharman. She’s one of too many victims the police have failed.

We need an inquest to help guide the police and other authorities on how they can prevent future deaths in similar circumstances.

I’m calling on the Coroner's Court of Queensland to hold an inquest in public interest to help bring our family the justice we deserve.

For ten years, Tina was classified as a missing person It was suspected Les Sharman murdered Tina. Although, he was never formally interviewed by police. It is now accepted that Les Sharman (now deceased) murdered Tina in 2012.

The Domestic and Family Violence Death Review and Advisory Board (DFVDRU) highlighted significant missed opportunities towards’s my mum’s case: “...consideration should be given as to whether a different response may have prevented Tina's disappearance and suspected murder by Les."

I was only 13 when I lost my mother and I’ve been looking for answers for a decade now. We need an inquest to explain the cause of death and throw light on the unresolved suspicious circumstances.

It is no secret that Australia is facing a domestic violence crisis. The institutions that are meant to protect us are unable to ensure our safety. The DFVDRU had found that a key issue with the police response was the lack of a thorough investigation and lack of initiative to take additional steps to protect my mother even though the officer had assessed she would likely experience violence in the relationship.

Not only could holding an inquest for Tina help prevent future deaths from occurring, but it can also raise awareness and educate the public and the coroner's Court about the complexities of Domestic Violence. Without Coronial support, the State sets a poor precedent for past, present and future victims of domestic violence.

It's time to stop promoting a culture of ignorance, gaslighting and victim-blaming. It is time to listen to the experts and accept the realities of domestic violence. Please sign and share my petition to bring #JusticeForTinaGreer.
