We, the undersigned, are writing to petition for an increase in the SASSA SRD grant. As you are aware, this grant is a lifeline for millions of South Africans who are struggling to make ends meet, especially during these difficult economic times.

The current grant amount of R350 per month is simply not enough to cover even the most basic needs, such as food, shelter, and healthcare. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the already dire situation for many families, with job losses and increased prices for essential goods.

We urge you to consider the following facts and reasons for increasing the SASSA SRD grant:

• The current grant amount is below the food poverty line, which means that it is not sufficient to cover the cost of a basic food basket.
• The grant has not been increased since April 2020, despite the rising cost of living and inflation.
• Just to keep the public calm, there has been rumours of SASSA grant extension but all of them were fake.
• Many households have lost their primary sources of income due to the pandemic, and the grant is the only source of income for some families.
• The grant is intended to provide temporary relief, but the pandemic has prolonged the need for financial assistance for many people.
• The government has a responsibility to ensure that its citizens have access to basic needs, including food, shelter, and healthcare.
• We believe that an increase in the SASSA SRD grant is urgently needed to alleviate the suffering of millions of South Africans. We therefore request that you consider increasing the grant amount to at least R500 per month.
