Why this petition matters

Started by Michael MacDonald

Dear Members of the Highland Council,

As concerned members of the public and visitors to Glencoe Mountain Resort (located off the A82 on Rannoch Moor), we are writing to urge you to prioritise upgrading the access road at Glencoe Mountain Resort. The current condition of the road poses a significant safety risk to drivers, pedestrian visitors and residents alike, and it also has negative economic impacts on the local community. The potholes, crumbling edges and uneven surfaces make it difficult for vehicles to navigate safely, while also causing damage to cars. The road surface is uneven and contains numerous potholes, cracks, and other damage that can lead to accidents, particularly in wet or icy weather conditions. Moreover, the road is narrow and winding, which can make it difficult for vehicles to pass each other.

Improving the access road at Glencoe Mountain Resort would bring significant benefits to the safety of visitors and residents. By providing a smoother and safer road surface, we can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and injuries, particularly during the winter months when conditions are particularly challenging. Additionally, by widening the road and making it easier for vehicles to pass each other, we can reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and reduce the risk of collisions. This would also reduce any incidence of drivers choosing to park on the verges of the busy A82 rather than attempting the challenging access road after snowfall or icing.

Moreover, improving the access road would also bring significant economic benefits to the local community. Glencoe Mountain Resort is a popular tourist destination all-year round and a rest-stop for drivers and passengers alike, and the current condition of the access road is a significant deterrent for potential visitors.

By investing in the road, we can make the resort more accessible, attractive, and safer for visitors, which will increase the number of tourists and support the local economy.

As a council road, the Glencoe Mountain Resort cannot make improvements themselves. While they do their best to encourage visitors to the region, they are being impeded by the state of the access road.

Therefore, we call on the Highland Council to prioritise the upgrade of the access road at Glencoe Mountain Resort. We urge members of the public to support this petition and demand action from the Council to ensure the safety of visitors and residents and to support the local economy.

It would be economical to piggyback this project onto the current improvements on the Rannoch Moor stretch of road about to take place. But if this cannot be done it should be considered in the very near future. Requests for improvements have been unresolved for over 30 years.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
