Why this petition matters

Started by Parents for Progress

UPDATED ON FEBRUARY 6, 2022:

On February 4, 2022, Judge Grischow granted the TRO to anti-mask Plaintiffs (discussed below). This Petition has been modified to direct our pro-mask efforts toward the Illinois General Assembly.

The Court repeatedly highlighted that it is the job of the legislature to pass laws on COVID mitigation measures. Whether or not we agree with the ruling, we are signing to demand the Illinois General Assembly act now. The safety of students and teachers, as well as our overall community, is being jeopardized by this decision.

As Illinois students, parents, teachers and members of the community, we are asking the General Assembly to pass legislation to require masks in schools when IDPH recommends the use of masks, based on transmission levels of COVID.

ORIGINAL REASON FOR PETITION:

Currently, there is a lawsuit pending in Sangamon County where roughly 700 plaintiffs are suing to remove the requirement that Illinois children wear masks in schools to protect against the spread of COVID-19.

The plaintiffs in this lawsuit claim that they speak for the “majority” in their pursuit to unmask children in Illinois schools.

We are tired of COVID-deniers and anti-maskers pushing their agenda on the rest of us.

By signing this Petition, we are saying that the anti-mask minority does not speak on behalf of the majority of Illinois residents.

As the majority, we believe mask usage is critical in Illinois schools to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in Illinois communities and to prevent hospitals from reaching capacity.

We support mask use in schools as a public health measure during this critical stage of the pandemic.

THIS PETITION IS OPEN TO ALL ILLINOIS RESIDENTS.
