Ghost guns are unregulated firearms that anyone - including minors and prohibited purchasers - can buy and build without a background check. These unserialized and untraceable “ghost gun kits” can be bought online and assembled at home.

There are no federal restrictions on who can buy gun kits or parts or on how many someone can buy. Kits and parts are relatively cheap, and they are intentionally marketed as unregulated and untraceable. They provide deadly firepower to white supremacist and terrorist groups who want to commit acts of violence without being detected.

We’re seeing the deadly impact ghost guns are having on our communities day in and day out. Just recently on the evening of May 14, a ghost gun was recovered from a teenager who was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a sixteen-year-old in Millennium Park. Because the gun is untraceable, it’s impossible to know where it came from and for law enforcement to stop these weapons at the source. And we are just beginning the summer months when gun violence tends to increase with warmer temperatures, so urgent action is required.

To fight this problem, the Illinois General Assembly passed House Bill 4383 to make ghost guns illegal. Now we need to tell Governor J.B. Pritzker to sign this bill IMMEDIATELY so we can get these deadly, untraceable weapons off our streets.
