Why this petition matters

The “Release Them Campaign” is geared towards bringing international attention to bear on the arbitrary arrests, torture, and incarceration of Prisoners of Conscience in jails, police and military detention centers and torture chambers across Cameroon.

The objective of the campaign is to focus global attention on these Prisoners of Conscience until they are all released. There are presently 3500 estimated Prisoners of Conscience incarcerated by the Regime including pregnant women, women and children as young as new born babies.

Among Cameroon’s political prisoners are University Professors, Scientists, Lawyers, Journalists, Trade Unionists, Activists, IT Engineers, Human Rights Advocates and entrepreneurs.

Ordinary citizens going about their business can for no reason find themselves in jail.

Specific to Anglophones, the preferred method is to abduct citizens from Anglophone Cameroon and imprison them in Francophone cities; thus, removing them from their families and support systems. This includes putting them on trial in French (a language they do not master) and often tried through military tribunals which lands them in these underground bunkers.

Incarceration is often accompanied by severe torture and deprivation. In the Secrétariat d'État à la Défense (SED), a torture Centre in the heart of the Capital – Yaoundé, the cries and wails of the prisoners is said to have psychologically damaging effects on humans found around the prisons. That is why they are locked up underground in dark bunkers.

Generally, jails are overcrowded, incredibly unhealthy, noisy, unclean, and filthy. The food provided is unfit for human consumption and malnutrition is common since the food supply is irregular and inadequate.
