Why this petition matters

Kettering Swimming Pool is 37 years old and is a 6 lane 25m pool, with a small gym. There are no economies of scale or co-location benefits.

The average age of a swimming pool built in England since 1960 is 38 years. In 2018 Kettering had 4.6 sqm of water for swimming per 1000 population, and this will fall to 4.0 sqm by 2031.

This is a third of the national average and a third of the water available in neighbouring towns. Kettering Borough Council's Sports Facilities Assessment (June 2020) described this as a "significant finding".

The Sports Facilities Assessment rates Kettering Swimming Pool as "Below Average".

There is no learner pool in Kettering - residents must travel to Corby, Wellingborough or Market Harborough to access shallow water for swimming lessons. No learner pool also restricts availability of the main pool reducing access for those that wish to take part in water based activity.

Swimming saves the NHS and Social Care System £357M per year. It is one of the most popular activities nationwide, especially among women and girls, who report that swimming doubles their self confidence. 1.4M adults have reported that swimming has significantly reduced their anxiety or depression.

Kettering Borough Council's Sports Facilities Strategy (2020) recommended the provision of a learner pool with "high priority" and that a feasibility study be performed to consider the future of Kettering Swimming Pool.

The provision of leisure facilities in Kettering is now the responsibility of North Northamptonshire Council.

We call on North Northamptonshire Council to deliver on Kettering Borough Council's recommendations to:

  • Provide a learner pool in Kettering
  • Undertake a feasibility study into the long term future of Kettering Swimming Pool and the provision of water locally
