Hermit crabs are some of the most misused pets in the pet store trade, because pet shops treat them like trash. They are wild caught and force them into painted shells.They are toxic to hermit crabs and should not be sold in pet shops. When hermit crabs get to pet shops they are often put in small wire cages and with gravel or dyed sand on the bottom. 

Hermit crabs die a lot under these horrible tanks. So you have to stop this and not buy hermit crabs because people are only supporting a cruel industry that have torn hermit crabs away from the home in the wild and ship them off to a mall or pet shop to be sold for profit.
