PETITION TO KEEP FRITZ & FRANZ BIERHAUS IN CORAL GABLES!

Fritz and Franz, our beloved neighborhood Bierhaus, is under attack by the City of Coral Gables!  After over 24 amazing years of service and dedication to the community, on September 27, 2023, City Attorney Cristina M. Suarez wrote a letter to Harald Neuweg, owner of Fritz and Franz, advising him that the City was terminating the Bierhaus’s lease effective May 31, 2024.  In another tone-deaf move, the City is looking to kill yet another small, family-owned business to make room for another fancy restaurant that is likely to fail like so many others.

CORAL GABLES: HAVE YOU ANY DECENCY?

By Carl Rachelson Miami's Community News

I confess; I have rarely visited Fritz & Franz Bierhaus in the past. I do not know its owner Harald Neuweg. I have eaten enough Bavarian food to carry me for a lifetime; I have no desire to eat more. My big drinking days are long gone. That said, I share a pound of frustration with those who are petitioning Coral Gables because after 24 years of service and dedication to the community, the City was terminating the Bierhaus’s lease effective May 31, 2024. For some strange, unrelated reason, I thought of Joseph McCarthy and his vicious efforts to elevate himself.

Boston lawyer Joseph Welch made his case at a session on June 9, 1954, when McCarthy accused one of Welch’s attorneys of being a Communist. Welch responded, “Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness.” When McCarthy tried to continue his attack, Welch angrily interrupted, “Let us not assassinate this lad further, senator. You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency?”

Coral Gables, have you not done enough to destroy small businesses like this? Have you no sense of decency?

In this cold-blooded murder, the City is looking to kill yet another small, family-owned business to make room for another corporate chain or faux fancy establishment owned by some restaurant group which begs the simple question: why?

Is there some payoff for the politicians behind this? Is this a vendetta like the one that pitted Joe Carollo against Bill Fuller? Is it simply some make-believe propaganda that claims a tax windfall is coming to the Gables? Does Pfizer, Amazon, or Baptist want it?

C’mon Gables? What’s next? Removal of the Arthur Murray sign? Must we enlist Lionel Messi and David Beckham on behalf of all the loyal football fans who have spent years on the Fritz & Franz deck watching the superstars spread the sport to the USA. Can we get a phone call from Jorge or Jose Mas on Fritz & Franz’s behalf? Gentlemen, if you’re listening, all we need are four phone calls to ensure that hundreds of us will continue to sit outside and watch the World Cup, Premier League, La Liga, and Champions Cup.

No one is better off without this establishment, like nobody would be better off without Ball & Chain, Books & Books, Versailles, Arbetter’s, Frankie’s or Joe’s Stone Crab. Are we better off without Wolfie’s, Scottie’s Landing, The Rascal House or Jimbo’s?

Man cannot live on development alone. Businesses like Fritz & Franz become etched into memory, and memories are made throughout time. Coral Gables, please don’t destroy everything that creates memories.
