Why this petition matters

Started by David Wong

A methadone clinic is slated to open soon in the heart of Chinatown and we’re asking for your support to stop this operation.

Chinatown has always been a historic and cultural destination for tourists visiting Vancouver. In addition, many of us locals have fond memories of spending time in Chinatown with our grandparents whether it be shopping at the independently owned groceries stores or having dim sum with our families.

However, what Chinatown has turned into in the past few years has been shocking. Many retail shops are closed and more and more homeless are setting up tents on the streets.

This new methadone clinic will further destroy the history of Vancouver Chinatown for many generations to come. Methadone clinic will attract those who are still heavily dependent on heroin to conglomerate at the corner of Main and East Pender, which is the main artery of Chinatown.

Please highly consider the safety of our community, those who reside and work in Chinatown as well as the tourists who visit Vancouver.

Many elderly and families often frequent Main Street to access the pharmacies, medical clinics, dental offices, retail shops, restaurants and banks.

Families with young children will have to walk past a line up of heroin withdrawing people and drug addicts. This is not how the city had proposed to clean up the DTES. In fact, it is a direct contradiction to the revitalization of Chinatown proposed by the City and the Province.

The City of Vancouver planner has already approved the building and development permits to this clinic and renovations are already under way. We must stop this before their business license to operate is granted!

Our goal is to keep Chinatown safe so that many more can continue to make fond memories like we did when we were children with our elders and our families.
