Why this petition matters

Started by Mariah Smith

Horse drawn carriages are cruel and exploiting. These horses are exhausted and suffering day by day. It’s just a ride to us but it’s a lifetime of endless servitude and slavery for them. The City of San Antonio needs to completely ban horse carriages. Having such cruelty on display downtown is disturbing and leaves a very poor reflection on our city. Horses are mentally and physically deteriorating in San Antonio, all for the sake of tourism. Mayor Ron Nirenburg and City Council need to ban this. As leaders, with such power and influence in this city, we are counting on you, for this is your responsibility to enact the change. We should not have acceptable and legal animal abuse taking place here.
If it were dogs or humans in their place instead, would this still be okay?

-Horses can be forced to work in all weather conditions and aren’t protected by the Animal Welfare Act.

-There’s many cases of accidents between horses and heavy urban traffic.

-They’re very sensitive to loud noises and startling sounds, which causes them a lot of stress.

-They suffer from heat exhaustion & fatigue to the point where they collapse in the streets.

-They suffer from respiratory problems/lung damage, “the same kind of damage you would expect from a heavy smoker” from the exhaust fumes of vehicles surrounding them.

-They suffer from leg problems, due to walking on hard pavement for many hours

-They can be sent to slaughter when they’re no longer useful to their owner.
