Why this petition matters

Following up from an earlier petition by Eric Morse and efforts by so many others to get the American Alliance of Museums to walk the walk and #ShowTheSalary on their jobs board, The National Emerging Museum Professionals Network (NEMPN) is requesting that the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) requires salaries on their jobs board.

This is work we care deeply about and do not take lightly. Salary transparency has been one of our Advocacy Committee initiatives for many years. As we garner support across the field to get our larger museum professional associations to commit to equitable practices (like this and abolishing unpaid internships) you can support this grassroots work in many ways.

Have you seen a museum job posting that does not include the salary? Submit it here and NEMPN will reach out to the institution to advocate for salary transparency. Currently, the common practice has been non-disclosure of salary ranges or hourly rates for museum jobs. Many organizations believe disclosing pay will limit the interest of potential talent, compromise their ability to negotiate for a salary range they can fit into their budget, or cause distress among current employees regarding pay disclosure. All of these concerns, though far from sympathetic, are actually counterproductive. Extensive articles from Human Resource professionals and organizations have been written with supporting data that demonstrate how including salary on job postings saves time for both the hiring team and the candidates and typically results in better fits for the organization’s internal culture. In 2022, we’re calling on museums to do their part and #PostTheSalary.

NEMPN is also advocating for Salary Transparency through the grassroots work of disclosing our salaries – museum worker to museum worker. Submit your salary info here (anonymously) and view the data in our dashboard. This project builds on the immensely helpful salary transparency spreadsheet from Art + Museum Transparency in 2019. In 2022, we are starting a new salary transparency database (with their blessing). It is free and accessible to all who are interested.

From 2016-2019, we worked with 43 museum associations to support the adoption of salary transparency policies on their job boards. Learn more about this initiative.
