Why this petition matters

In the early morning hours of December 16, 2021, Mel “Trick” Davis passed away of natural causes in Vancouver, Canada at the age of 84 years old.

Mel's storied basketball career was highlighted by his time with the World-Famous Harlem Globetrotters playing from 1961 to 1979. His legacy continued as a coach and community leader building youth development programs across the lower mainland of British Columbia for over 30 years.

As alumni of his program, we are hoping  to honour the legacy of Mel Davis with a plaque or naming of the gym at Kitsilano Community Center where he ran his program for years. Mel provided a welcoming environment for kids of all backgrounds teaching acceptance, respect and hard work. These lessons and connections made still shape our lives today.

Please show your support for this cause by signing your name in order to show the community support for this endeavour. If you would like to know more about the life of Mel Davis, please check out the Oscar-Nominated film "Hardwood" directed by his son Hubert.

Thanks for your time and consideration.
Alumni of "Kitsilano Youth Basketball" and "Have a Ball Will Teach" Programs.
