EFVA (Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia) is working to add a section to legislation, HB 392, in Virginia to bring more awareness and research to understand SUDEP and find ways to prevent it. SUDEP is the sudden, unexpected death of a person with epilepsy. SUDEP is severely understudied and with accurate reporting as well as research, we will gain more insight on why a healthy person that is functioning normally with epilepsy can just randomly die. This bill would require the office of the Chief Medical Examiner to report any case that is involved directly with SUDEP as well as provide EFVA with as much information as possible. We also aim to implement a training program for medical examiners in regards to SUDEP for proper identification. Your support of this bill passing through legislation would offer many people living with epilepsy in Virginia relief and safety.
