It was announced in December 2021 that Hard Rock International is going to buy The Mirage Las Vegas from MGM Resorts International, and a few days later the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Hard Rock intends to "demolish" The Volcano, the iconic 30-year-old artistic spectacle of a free hourly show that blasts fire, smoke, water, and lights high into the desert air four times every night while an intense tribal soundtrack energizes every audience.

The Volcano attracts 100s of adults and children along the Las Vegas Strip every time it explodes. The local reaction has been very negative toward the idea of demolishing it. A few enthusiastically dedicated local Vegans have teamed up to petition Hard Rock International and the local Las Vegas government with the intention to reverse the new owner's plan to destroy this one-of-its-kind masterpiece.

We are planning sometime this July to present our results and especially this petition to Hard Rock's CEO Jim Allen.

Meanwhile, we continue to receive positive coverage from local and international media (TV stations, newspapers, blogs, etc.) to strongly motivate him to reconsider his plans to demolish The Volcano and build a giant neon guitar in its place instead of doing what's right: to preserve one of the few spectacular crowd-drawing free attractions Las Vegas has to offer.

The Mirage was the first "megaresort" ever to appear in Las Vegas, and on its opening day in November 1989 it was the most expensive resort ever built. From day one the The Volcano has been delighting The Mirage's visitors to what is an increasingly rare and totally awesome free Vegas attraction and highly emotional experience. Moreover, it's located on the most visible piece of land on the Las Vegas Strip! Frankly, it should be a historical landmark.

Hopefully and with your help, we can accomplish the goal -- but we need enough show of support in order to earn the Hard Rock executive's attention. The Volcano is as much a human experience as it is a revenue-positive element of the property. (Perhaps that's the critical message that isn't yet resonating with them.)
