Why this petition matters

If you think that the Associate Minister for the Environment should be eating vegan and you agree that, as there are numerous reports stating how vital it is to change our diet, he needs to change his diet too! Sign this petition.

Why should he go vegan?

  • Dr Shaw also holds the climate change portfolio, so it’s vital that he steps up the leadership and speaks out as a vegan.
  • It has been proven that eating a vegan diet will reduce carbon emissions due to food production by up to 75%. This is huge and it is vital that more humans eat this way if we are to have a sustainable future.

In NZ the emissions from agriculture are nearly 50% of our total,

  • It is clear that this should be where we start to reduce emissions.
  • It is not sustainable to continue to produce milk powder for the Chinese market.
  • Many waste dairy products end up in processed foods in Aotearoa.
  • Dairying is polluting our waterways and takes up a lot of land. It also requires a lot of water, a precious resource that could be used to grow food to feed directly to humans.

With 8 billion people on the planet and rising,

  • What we eat has never been a more pertinent question.
  • Many things we can do without, but food, water and air are vital to our survival.
  • We need to change the way we farm, as well as change what we eat, if we want to give our children a sustainable future.
