Why this petition matters

Started by Loretta Lau

We express our deep concern and outrage over the actions of the Hong Kong police today, which saw the seizure of the "Pillar of Shame" monument, a powerful symbol of democracy and human rights. The fact that the police used the pretext of an "“incitement to subversion”" case to justify their actions is deeply troubling and raises serious questions about the state of artistic freedom in Hong Kong.

We stand in solidarity with Mr. Jens Galschiot, and his pursuit of freedom and democracy through his art, and we thank him for his selfless dedication. The "Pillar of Shame" on the campus of the University of Hong Kong is a testament to the lives of the victims. The actions of the Hong Kong police not only infringe upon artistic freedom but also attack the memory and legacy of the victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

We urge the Hong Kong authorities to respect artistic freedom and immediately return the "Pillar of Shame." We also call on the international community to join us in condemning this blatant violation of human rights and creative freedom and to pressure the Hong Kong government to protect the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong citizens.
