Why this petition matters

Started by Fast Food Toys

This petition is aimed at McDonald's USA however the goal is to have McDonald's in ALL countries around the world to eventually adopt this same initiative. (e.g. McDonald's in North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Australia, etc.)

Happy Meal toys have been an integral part of our society for the last 40+ years. The majority of Happy Meal toys have been high quality plastic toys. Recently McDonald's USA has decided to switch to offering paper based toys. While this is a seemingly great green initiative, the quality of the new paper Happy Meal toys is severely lacking. The longevity and quality of the paper Happy Meal toys leave much to be desired. For an example, look at the paper Sing 2 Happy Meal toys for a comparison of the quality of the toys. We have received a lot of feedback from collectors and Happy Meal fans alike that the new paper toys are no longer worthy of them buying the toys or the Happy Meal.

What we suggest instead is for McDonald's USA to follow in McDonald's Japan's footsteps whereby they have a recycling program in place nationwide.
As an example, at all of the 2,900 McDonald's restaurants in Japan, they have a recycling bin in place where customers can drop off unwanted or no longer played with Happy Meal toys. From there, the delivery trucks returning from the McDonald's restaurants take the collected toys to shredding facilities where they are broken down into different materials. Some of the plastic is pelletized for use in producing serving trays; remaining materials, including paper and metal, are recycled via other waste streams.

In 2018, the first year of the program, McDonald's Japan collected around 1.27 million used plastic toys that were turned into over 165,000 trays. In 2019, they expanded the program and collected 3.4 million used plastic toys, followed by about 3 million toys in 2020.
Today it's one of the largest projects to recycle plastic toys in Japan and helps create environmental awareness among McDonald's Japan's youngest customers. (This info has been sourced from McDonald's Corporate website)

We hereby petition McDonald's USA to initiate a similar recycling program here in the USA while still offering high quality Happy Meal toys just like McDonald's has for the last 40 years. We also would applaud McDonald's USA on searching to offer high quality Happy Meal toys made with other sustainable materials and plastic alternatives while still keeping the high quality and durability of the toys.

Please sign this petition and let's get McDonald's USA and McDonald's in many other countries onboard!

Thank you.
