Why this petition matters

Started by Pragathi Tummala

As members of ISPCAN, we are deeply concerned about the traumatic impact of armed conflict on children. Our commitment to child rights and our belief that every child deserves a healthy environment to reach their full potential compels us to act.

In countries with ongoing armed conflicts, children are often the most affected. According to UNICEF, between 2005 and 2022, more than 120,000 children were killed or maimed in conflict zones worldwide. This violence not only causes immediate harm but also has long-term psychological effects that can hinder a child's development and potential.   The UN Security Council has condemned six grave violations against children in times of war: Killing and maiming children; recruitment of child soldiers; attacks on schools or hospitals; rape or sexual violence; abduction of children; and denial of humanitarian access for children.  Yet during this period between 2005 and 2022, more than 315,000 grave violations have been verified to have occurred in more than 30 armed conflict situations across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. So, we know this number is undoubtedly far higher, just as we know the numbers of child maltreatment are under reported.  Maybe for governments this is just collateral damage, but this is not okay. Buildings can be reconstructed, but trauma cannot be erased.

Stand with ISPCAN because we believe that promoting non-violence is key to mitigating these traumatic impacts. It is essential for international organizations and governments alike to prioritize peaceful resolutions and protect the rights of children amidst these conflicts.

By signing this petition, you are joining us in advocating for non-violence as a means of safeguarding our future generations from the devastating impacts of war. Stand with us today; let's give every child a chance at reaching their full potential by promoting peace over violence.
