Why this petition matters

Started by Wayne Cares

On Thursday February 10, 2022 a CBD Kratom store opened in downtown Wayne PA - yards from Radnor Middle and St. Katherine’s schools.

  • What do they sell? They sell Kratom, Delta 8, and several other new intoxicating drugs which are illegal in many states, but are not yet illegal in PA.  Unlike medical marijuana dispensaries, these stores and their products are completely unregulated and unmonitored.  Many of the drugs they sell are infused into candy or soda.
  • Is Kratom safe? Mayo Clinic describes Kratom as “unsafe”. It is illegal in many US states, including progressive states like Vermont. There was recently a death in West Chester by someone who allegedly overdosed on Kratom.
  • Who can buy Kratom? There is no law in PA that prohibits minor children from buying or possessing Kratom. The Company has a policy to sell to anyone over age 18, but Radnor citizens have been able to buy products from their website with no age verification. The store’s product catalog was found in Jules Pizza, frequented by many middle school children.
  • Do they sell marijuana?  Sort of.  Even though they do everything possible to make it seem as though legal marijuana is available for purchases in the store (including using a giant pot leaf as its logo on its sign on Lancaster Ave.) they do not have a license to sell medical or recreational marijuana.  Recreational marijuana is illegal in PA. They do sell low-THC (the chemical in marijuana that makes you high) products, which are legal, but do not restrict you from buying large quantities of these low-THC products.  And no government or other agency tests, inspects, or regulates the low-THC or any other products they sell.

This business opened illegally because it did not file for any business licenses, construction permits, design review approvals, or occupancy permits. The store intentionally hid the nature of their products from township officials and residents. Had they filed the proper paperwork, residents would have been able to voice their concerns that this store was opening within yards of 2 local schools. According to township officials, the store will remain closed until they can satisfy these requirements.

By signing this petition you are asking for the following:

1. That you support banning all Kratom and similar products in PA.

2. That the Radnor Township Board of Commissioners will prohibit businesses from opening that blatantly disregard our permitting and approval processes. These businesses should be banned from opening since they lack the respect for the residents and laws of Radnor Township.

3. That the Radnor Township Board of Commissioners be proactive in creating ordinances to prevent businesses of this nature from opening in our township such as recreational marijuana stores, needle exchange programs, safe injection sites, casinos, sports betting establishments, and adult entertainment.

Please sign and share this petition to make Radnor a safe place for families and to protect our children from Kratom a deadly, and addictive substance.
