It has been nine months since the Myanmar military's brutal and illegal attempted coup. The junta has continued its violent assault throughout the country and increased its attacks against civilians, killing and detaining thousands.

Leading international and regional accounting bodies from across the world are acting disgracefully by participating and sponsoring the upcoming ASEAN Federation of Accountants Conference, in which the junta’s auditor general is “Guest of Honour”.

Justice For Myanmar calls on peak bodies the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), which are event partners, and the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), which is a participant, to withdraw from the conference unless the Myanmar military junta is excluded.

On November 8, the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) and CPA Australia withdrew their involvement in the conference under pressure over reputation laundering for the Myanmar military junta. On November 10, the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) withdrew from the conference over the Myanmar military junta's involvement. On November 13, the Japanese Institute of Certified Public Accountants (JICPA) withdrew under pressure. Other organisations must now follow. 

The junta’s auditor general must be rejected for his role in war crimes, crimes against humanity and grand corruption, not legitimised on the world stage by leading bodies of the accounting profession.

This high-level accounting conference is co-organised by the Myanmar Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA), a body that operates under the junta-controlled Myanmar Accountancy Council. Justice For Myanmar has called for MICPA's suspension from the ASEAN Federation of Accountants.
