Why this petition matters

Started by Jan Hutchings

Fulham Football Club wants to build a pier that will extend 85 metres into the middle of the river.

A pier of this size in this location is dangerous and will significantly disrupt the sporting activity for which this beautiful stretch of river is world-renowned.

The river between Putney and Hammersmith is one of the busiest stretches of water for leisure and competitive sport in the UK. There are numerous rowing and sailing clubs, sea cadets/scouts, swimmers, canoeists, kayakers and paddleboarders on the river.

This stretch of water is an important sporting and recreation venue for schools, children and adults who want to learn about and enjoy the river. These groups have the right to use the river and to do so safely.

The river also hosts some of the UK's most important rowing events, including the Men's and Women's Head of the River Races, University Boat Race, Great River Race, the Devizes to Westminster canoeing race and numerous other local events. These contribute to keeping thousands of people active on the water and continuing the traditions of the river that stretch back hundreds of years.

The Fulham Football Club proposal is uncompromising. It will create a significant navigational obstruction at a location that is already a natural bottleneck, especially at low tide. No formal consultation has taken place with those who currently make use of the river. It seems that the club has little regard for the impact on the sports which have existed along side it for as long as the ground has been in use.

The pier will service passenger ferries whose regular schedules will extend up river from their present limit at Putney Bridge, thereby encroaching into this busy boating area. Their bulk and limited manoeuvrability further increase the navigational hazards.

On match days, these ferries will be backed up along the river, awaiting a berth to offload their passengers. Each ferry will need to turn around to go back down the river; they will block most of the river on every occasion compounding the navigational dangers.

This pier will destroy the sporting and recreational use of the river.

The clubs are unanimous; a pier in this location is unsafe and compromises the ability of a huge number of people to use the river.

Please help us keep this stretch of water focused on recreation, not commercial exploitation, and preserve something that has defined our community in southwest London for well over 100 years.
