Why this petition matters

Started by Hannah Harrison

The proposed monkey facility in Bainbridge and Decatur County, Georgia poses a significant threat to our local environment and community. This facility is expected to house over 30,000 monkeys to sell to labs for research purposes, making it the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere.

However, such large-scale facilities can lead to serious environmental issues including waste management problems and potential spread of diseases.

At full capacity, the proposed facility in Bainbridge would produce more than 440,000 gallons of wastewater a day—enough feces, urine, saliva, and other fluids to nearly fill an Olympic-size swimming pool every day. This poses a major risk of environmental damage to nearby land and waterways. Moreover, it raises ethical concerns about animal welfare. More information can be found here

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that non-human primates are used in research due to their genetic similarity to humans but this does not justify the potential harm caused by such facilities. Furthermore, according to the Humane Society International (HSI), there are alternatives available that can replace or reduce animal use in biomedical research.

We urge our local government officials and relevant authorities in Bainbridge and Decatur County to reconsider this project keeping in mind its potential negative impacts on our environment, public health risks associated with it as well as ethical implications related to animal welfare.

Please sign this petition if you stand against the construction of this monkey facility. Let's protect our community together!
