Why this petition matters

As an avid gamer and a consumer, I've experienced firsthand the limitations imposed by console manufacturers like Microsoft and Sony. Despite investing money into these systems, we are denied full control over our consoles. The new Digital Markets Act set by the EU, due to go active in 2024, allows third-party app stores and user-selected default browsers on phones. However, this freedom does not extend to our gaming consoles.

We are forced to set up our PS4/5 or Xbox One with an internet connection and pay $20 on the Xbox just to install basic 3rd-party software with almost no control over it. Modding games is out of the question - a feature that many gamers enjoy on other platforms for personalization and enhanced gameplay experience.

The lack of ownership extends beyond the console itself; it applies also to the games we purchase. We spend money only to find out that we don't fully own any software - a frustrating realization for those who have paid specifically for modding capabilities.

While piracy and cheating are concerns raised against such freedoms, these issues persist even on PCs where users have more control over their systems. It's clear that restricting user access is not an effective solution against these problems.

It's time Microsoft and Sony reconsider their policies in light of the upcoming Digital Markets Act. They should allow us more freedom over our consoles - let us choose which apps we want to install, let us mod our games if we wish so without additional charges or restrictions.

We urge you all who share this sentiment - sign this petition! Let's push for change together!
