En soutien aux philosophes Divya Dwivedi et Shaj Mohan

Divya Dwivedi et Shaj Mohan sont parmi les philosophes les plus importants vivants aujourd'hui. Dwivedi et Mohan ont développé leur pensée au-delà de la conception « occidentale » de la philosophie au sein d'une communauté d'amitié avec Jean-Luc Nancy, Bernard Stiegler, Achille Mbembe et Barbara Cassin. Leur projet avec Jean-Luc Nancy est de trouver un nouveau départ pour la philosophie au-delà des histoires de la philosophie géo-politisées et « racialisées » tout en reconnaissant les enseignements de la déconstruction de la philosophie entreprise par Heidegger et Derrida. Leurs contributions de chercheurs sont précieuses non seulement pour la discipline de la philosophie, mais aussi pour les sciences et la politique. 

Leur engagement extraordinaire en faveur de la justice, de l'égalité et des libertés politiques des peuples du monde entier a un coût élevé. En Inde, où ils résident, ils sont régulièrement harcelés et menacés de mort sur les réseaux sociaux. Ces menaces sont sérieuses. Ces dernières années, alors que des intellectuels étrangers se sont vu refuser l'entrée en Inde, des intellectuels indiens ont été emprisonnés ou assassinés. L'année dernière, il a été rapporté dans Le Monde que Dwivedi et Mohan avaient été menacés de décapitation par l'extrême droite hindoue en Inde, et à cette occasion Nancy a écrit dans Libération pour les soutenir et condamner cette situation. 

Les contributions universitaires de Dwivedi et Mohan sur l'oppression des castes en Inde - qu'ils ont qualifiées de forme la plus ancienne de racisme et d'apartheid - sont à l'origine de l'animosité de l'extrême droite hindoue à leur égard. Comme Dwivedi et Mohan l'ont démontré à plusieurs reprises, l'oppression des castes est souvent masquée par le majoritarisme hindou. Bien qu'il y ait une prise de conscience généralisée de l'oppression des minorités religieuses en Inde, le monde n'a pas encore saisi les réalités de l'oppression des castes. Ils ont également montré qu'en Inde, la théorie postcoloniale et le projet décolonial visent tous deux à restaurer l'idée suprémaciste de la caste supérieure de l'Inde. Leur célèbre ouvrage sur M. K. Gandhi, « Gandhi and Philosophy: On Theological Anti-politics », est paru avec une préface de Jean-Luc Nancy. Dans ce travail complexe, ils soutiennent que les contributions de Gandhi à la création de projets postcoloniaux et décoloniaux doivent être comprises pour combattre de nouvelles formes de racismes et de tendances politiques.

In support of the philosophers Divya Dwivedi and Shaj Mohan

Divya Dwivedi and Shaj Mohan are among the most important philosophers in the world alive today. Dwivedi and Mohan have developed their thought beyond the “western” concept of philosophy within a community of friendship with Jean-Luc Nancy, Bernard Stiegler, Achille Mbembe, and Barbara Cassin. Their project with Jean-Luc Nancy is to find a new beginning for philosophy beyond the geo-politicised and “racialised” histories of philosophy while acknowledging the insights of the deconstruction of philosophy undertaken by Heidegger and Derrida. Their research contributions are valuable not just to the discipline of philosophy, but also sciences and politics.

Their extraordinary commitment to justice, equality, and the political freedoms of people everywhere in the world comes at a serious price. In India, where they reside, they face harassments and death threats on social media on a regular basis. These threats are significant. In recent years, while foreign intellectuals have been denied entry in India, Indian intellectuals have been jailed or assassinated. Last year it was reported in Le Monde that Dwivedi and Mohan faced threats to decapitate them from the Hindu far right in India, and on that occasion Nancy wrote in the Liberation supporting them and condemning their situation. 

The research contributions of Dwivedi and Mohan on the caste oppression in India—which they called the oldest form of racism and apartheid—is at the root of the animosity of the Hindu far right in India towards them. As Dwivedi and Mohan have demonstrated several times caste oppression is often masked as Hindu majoritarianism. While there is widespread awareness about the oppression of religious minorities in India, the world is yet to catch up with the realities of caste oppression. They have also shown that, in India, postcolonial theory and the decolonial project are both aimed at restoring the upper caste supremacist idea of India. Their renowned work on M. K. Gandhi, “Gandhi and Philosophy: On Theological Anti-politics” appeared with a foreword by Jean-Luc Nancy. In this complex work they argue that Gandhi’s contributions towards creating the postcolonial and decolonial projects should be understood to combat new forms of racisms and political tendencies. 

We express solidarity with the philosophers Divya Dwivedi and Shaj Mohan. We are deeply concerned about the harassments, the highly stressful atmosphere of intimidation, and threats to life faced by Dwivedi and Mohan.
