New York rally in solidarity with Zhengzhou workers; Apple's new statement continues to hide the truth

11月6日，来自中国的活动人士在纽约第五大道苹果旗舰店门前举办了一场旨在声援郑州富士康工人、反对非人道对待和强迫劳动的抗议活动。同日，苹果公司发布官方声明，称因其代工厂（指郑州富士康）爆发新冠疫情，苹果产品出货量受到影响，并称苹果一直高度关注其供应链上的工人的健康和安全。

On Sunday, November 6th, Chinese overseas activists and allies protested in front of the Apple store on Fifth Avenue in New York, building on the following petition with the support of labor and community organizations across the world. On the same day, Apple released a statement detailing that “the [Zhengzhou] facility is currently operating at significantly reduced capacity. As we have done throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we are prioritizing the health and safety of the workers in our supply chain.” 

我们认为，苹果的声明空洞且虚伪，近乎欺骗。由于iPhone14系列全球热卖，苹果对其代工企业施加的严苛的产量要求是造成工人权益被侵害、被剥夺的直接原因。这与其“高度关注工人健康和安全”的宣言背道而驰。

Apple’s statement is deceitful and unacceptable. Apple’s increased production quota has directly led to the gross negligence of workers at Foxconn last month, and it has never prioritized “the health and safety of the workers” as it now claims. 

对此，我们的回应是：我们将继续坚持最初的诉求，要求对郑州富士康近期发生的人权侵害事件进行公开、透明、可信服的第三方调查；富士康和苹果公司亦须对自身的过失公开道歉并承担相应责任。此外，苹果应该制定一个详细可行的减产方案，以使郑州富士康厂方和工人能够得一喘息之机，并利用这一窗口期落实对工人的保障及补偿等工作。针对工人的诉求，富士康方面必须做到以下几点：对已经造成的损害进行相应的赔偿；在厂区内提供充足的基本物资供应；制定合理预案以应对未来的类似危机，并在其中充分考虑到工人的健康、安全、人身自由及生存需求等因素。

We stand by our original demands to call on Apple to pursue an independent, third-party investigation of the conditions in Zhengzhou’s Foxconn. Apple and Foxconn must publicly acknowledge their poor treatment of workers and be held accountable. Given its past record, Apple should also provide a detailed plan as to what steps it is taking to reduce production capacity and care for its workers. Per our original demands, such steps should at least include compensation for the workers harmed under its watch, provide adequate basic necessities, and include a plan for how it would slow production to prioritize workers’ health if cases begin to spike again. 

抗争不会结束。苹果不痛不痒的声明向我们展示了商业巨头们是如何一边举着人道和进步的大旗，一边为自己造成的不人道事件文过饰非的。郑州富士康工人的惨痛遭遇只是冰山一角，类似的血汗工厂在中国和整个亚洲地区普遍存在。我们呼吁国际社会持续关注这以亿计数的工人群体并勇于为他们发声，他们不是螺丝钉，他们生老病死、喜怒哀乐，与我们每个人都一样。为他们的权利和尊严发声，就是为我们自己发声。

This campaign is not over, and Apple’s statement demonstrates that the company is eager to paper over its record of workers’ abuse for profit—even under pressure from civil society. The conditions in Zhengzhou are only the tip of the iceberg in a larger context of widespread labor exploitation in China, and we call on the global community to continue amplifying this case.
