Why this petition matters

Started by Ryan Callstrom

According to her own website (drdawnhughes.com), "Dawn M. Hughes, Ph.D., ABPP is a clinical and forensic psychologist in New York City who specializes in the assessment and treatment of interpersonal violence, traumatic stress and the anxiety disorders."

Dr. Hughes gave testimony in the Depp vs. Heard defamation case on May 3rd and 4th 2022. She was retained as a expert witness by the Woods Rogers law firm on behalf of their client Amber Heard. In her testimony, she showed obvious and inappropriate bias towards Ms. Heard. She all but admitted to determining that Ms. Heard suffers from PTSD and was a victim to IPV prior to examination of the facts and administration of psychometric testing, poisoning any conclusions or results from her evaluation or testing of Ms. Heard. In making that decision Dr. Hughes showed clear disregard and reckless abandon for her profession, the field she represents, and the justice system she serves in her role as a Forensic Psychologist.

Dr. Hughes is listed on her website as specializing in "Interpersonal Violence

  • Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse (Physical/Sexual/Emotional)
  • Intimate Partner Violence (Domestic Violence)
  • Rape and Sexual Assault
  • Physical Assault, Mugging, Violent Crime
  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Complex Trauma and Complex PTSD"

Under that guise she is certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology as a Forensic Psychologist. Her actions and testimony do NOT align with the certification and position she holds.

Videos of the trial are all over YouTube, but the footage I watched of Dr. Hughes' testimony prior to starting this petition (full coverage excluding breaks and sidebar conversation) is day 13 (direct examination) https://youtu.be/ETCkYAh1my8 and day 14 (cross examination) https://youtu.be/Az_KJBowdX4

Dr. Hughes' actions prior to her testimony alone show extreme and unethical bias, but perhaps even more telling is her impassioned description of Mr. Depp's alleged abuse of Ms. Heard as if she witnessed these alleged events herself, as if these allegations are undisputable facts. She did not witness anything that happened between Mr. Depp and Ms. Heard prior to these proceedings, did not perform an evaluation of Mr. Depp (has never even met Mr. Depp according to her testimony during cross examination), and yet somehow concluded in her "professional" opinion that Mr. Depp perpetrated Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) against Ms. Heard.

In her testimony Dr. Hughes said she had reviewed evidence in the course of her evaluation (including audio files, text messages, and photographs), and despite contradictory evidence that Ms. Heard in fact perpetrated acts of abuse on Mr. Depp, Dr. Hughes testified that she did not believe Mr. Depp was a victim of IPV perpetrated by Ms. Heard, and that Ms. Heard's alleged violence towards Mr. Depp was only a reaction to Mr. Depp's alleged abuse of Ms. Heard (however during cross examination Dr. Hughes did testify that on a couple occasions where Ms. Heard was alleged to be the aggressor, "if true" Ms. Heard was not perpetrating reactive violence).

No matter who you support, I think it is clear that Dr. Hughes is abusing her position in a highly unethical manner bordering on malpractice.

Please sign this petition to remove her from any psychological organization she is associated with and end her engagement in the judicial process, so we can put a stop to her unethical behavior.
