Why this petition matters

Started by Giulia Casalini

On 18 August 2022, David Eddington (Head of Cycle Hire at Transports for London) communicated via email that the prices of renting Santander bikes will rise on 12 September 2022 because of the introduction of new e-cycles.

Currently, the DAILY cost for unlimited bike rides is £2 (for journeys up to 30 minutes). From 12 September this daily fee will be scrapped, with a cost of £1.65 per SINGLE RIDE (for journeys up to 30 minutes).

Currently, the YEARLY cost is £90 (for journeys up to 30 minutes). From 12 September this will cost £120 per year (for journeys up to 60 minutes), an increase of over 33%.

See this link for more details about the costs https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/cycling/santander-cycles/what-you-pay

Following the world-wide environmental and health alert raised by the Covid-19 pandemic and the distressing levels of climate change, it is of utmost importance that cycling becomes an economically accessible method for people to travel around the city.

The scheme should not make the prices prohibitive to people with low or no earnings. Instead, it should support those who want to use the bikes as their main or alternative way to move around London.

We therefore request David Eddington, TfL and Mayor Sadiq Khan to:
- stop the rise of bike ride costs and introduce reduced prices for those in less privileged economic situations;
- expand the Cycle Hire scheme across the city through more bike stations, rather than through additional expensive e-cycles.

These suggestions will allow more people to afford safer and greener travel routes across London.

In the hope for a more sustainable and healthier future
