Why this petition matters

Started by WMHS Projects

The former Baptist church at the corner of Clara Street and Bay Terrace originated from a church built in 1912 in Edith Street.  In 1930 the church was moved to its current location in Bay Terrace. Being situated in the prime position on the main street of Wynnum, the church witnessed many life events of the community, including the wedding of Jack Sands, son of Joe Sands who was Wynnum Shire Clerk, one of founding members of the church, Life Deacon and Treasurer for 42 years.

Brisbane City Council listed the church as a heritage building. However, the risk of it being removed from Wynnum is now very real!

The Wynnum Manly Historical Society Inc. is spearheading attempts to keep this heritage listed church local. Negotiations are currently underway to remove the church to Logan. But it is an important part of local Wynnum history and should remain in the area where it has been for 109 YEARS! The society has put in an offer to keep the building in the Wynnum area with a view of establishing a local heritage and resource centre but… WE NEED YOUR HELP!

It is extremely important that the church remains in the community where people know its history and can appreciate its presence.

Please sign the petition calling on the Brisbane City Council and the land owner to keep the building in our suburb.
