Construct a Skatepark in Washington, PA

Construct a Skatepark in Washington, PA
The Issue
Our city of Washington, PA is currently lacking a dedicated space for our skateboarding community. As per the 2019 American Community Survey, there are over 13,000 residents under the age of 18 in our city (source: U.S. Census Bureau). Many of these young individuals have expressed their interest in skateboarding but lack a safe and legal environment to practice and enjoy this sport. The construction of a skatepark would not only provide them with such an environment but also promote physical activity and social interaction among our youth. Let's invest in the future of our children and make Washington, PA more inclusive for all sports enthusiasts. Please sign this petition to show your support for building a skatepark in our city.
Why a Skatepark is Good for Our Community:
1. Promoting Physical Activity: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only about 1 in 3 children in the United States get the recommended amount of physical activity each day. Skateboarding is a physically demanding activity that can help combat childhood obesity and promote a healthy lifestyle. A dedicated skatepark would provide our youth with an engaging and fun way to stay active, contributing to their overall well-being.
2. Crime Reduction: Numerous studies have shown that when communities invest in recreational facilities like skateparks, they often experience a decrease in youth-related crime. Providing young individuals with constructive and positive outlets, such as skateboarding, can help steer them away from negative behaviors and improve overall community safety.
3. Social Interaction: Skateparks are not just about tricks and maneuvers; they also serve as gathering places for social interaction. Skateboarding fosters a sense of camaraderie, and the skatepark becomes a community hub where young people build friendships and develop valuable social skills.
4. Inclusivity and Diversity: Skateparks are known for their inclusivity. People of all backgrounds, genders, and skill levels can enjoy skateboarding. This promotes diversity, tolerance, and acceptance in our community, making Washington, PA a more inclusive place for all sports enthusiasts.
5. Economic Benefits: A well-constructed skatepark can have positive economic impacts on our city. It can attract visitors from neighboring areas, increasing foot traffic in local businesses, such as cafes, restaurants, and skate shops. This can contribute to the growth of our local economy.
6. Skill Development: Skateboarding encourages skill development in areas like balance, coordination, and problem-solving. These skills are transferable to other aspects of life, helping young individuals become more confident and capable.
