National Internet Radio Day (NIRD)
National Internet Radio Day (NIRD)
Why this petition matters
People all around the country, indeed all over the world, use Internet radio every day for entertainment, news, and information. Internet radio is the new shortwave. You can literally receive tens of thousands of Internet radio stations for from all four corners of the globe. You can also get free podcasts. Most of these programs are free and you don't need a license or a big rooftop antenna to get them. What's more, the stations come in crystal clear any time of the day or night and usually in true two-channel stereo.
Moreover, most Internet radio station streams include station logos and metadata, describing the broadcast and the music (if applicable).
Stations can be easily accessed from Internet radios, computers, smart assistant speakers, smart devices like phones and tablets, and other sources. As long as you have one of these devices and strong, reliable Internet service, you can get Internet radio!
There's already a World Radio Day, and although it was created to shine a light on radio in general, the importance of AM Radio is emphasized. It's time a day be established to celebrate Internet radio and promote all it has to offer. There are many people who have never heard of Internet radio and there are even more who have heard of it but don't understand how to use it or have written it off assuming it to be too complicated.
With costs for home Internet service dropping, now is the time to recognize this unique radio technology.
According to Wikipedia, "On November 7, 1994, WXYC (89.3 FM Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA) became the first traditional radio station to announce broadcasting on the Internet."
As a a longtime Internet radio blogger with my own website (RecommendedStations.com) and Patreon campaign (patreon.com/RecommendedStationsdevoted) to reviewing Internet stations, and a former Vice President of Product Development for hi-fi Internet table radios, I propose November 7th to be National Internet Radio Day (NIRD).
