Appeal for better filming of World Table Tennis
Appeal for better filming of World Table Tennis
Why this petition matters
Table tennis fans around the world wish to make their general discontent known to the WTT (World Table Tennis organisation) regarding the way that the WTT matches are being filmed : this means camera positioning and angles.
We understand that sponsor visibility is important however displaying the sport properly is also capital.
We ask that a better balance be found between sponsor display and filming action.
Since the creation of it's new formula, WTT has adopted a relatively high camera angle looking down towards the table, from it's side and no longer from the back. Now, we have player 1 on the screen's left and player 2 on the screen's right. This camera angle makes it almost impossible to appreciate the player's technical abilities and ball path (with spin) which is, when filmed accordingly, highly spectacular due to the extreme speed and ball trajectories involved. When filmed as it is now, ball trajectory and spin effects are practically unseen, everything looks "flat". Another major negative effect from this filming angle is : following the ball from side to side is difficult because of it's speed - this problem is made even worse with the current low 30 frames per second uploads on the WTT youtube channel.
As a solution, we ask the WTT to look at the Japanese and German professional leagues as examples of the ideal way to film high level table tennis. The camera angles used by these 2 commercially orientated leagues are ideal with a good balance between sponsor display and filming the show on display.
