Why this petition matters

Started by Sara Murphy

I am a passionate user of Wattpad, as are many others. We have found a community within this platform where we can share our stories, ideas, and even personal issues through Direct Messages. This feature has been instrumental in fostering close-knit relationships among users, providing a private space for role-playing activities and intimate conversations that cannot be replicated in public comment sections or message boards. Some users utilise the DMs as a way to contact friends and even siblings.

Wattpad's recent announcement about the removal of the Direct Messaging feature has left us disheartened. The decision is part of Naver's ongoing changes to the platform which seem to be stripping away its unique features one by one. If this continues, we fear that Wattpad will lose its essence and its loyal user base will migrate to other platforms like AO3.

Direct Messaging on Wattpad is not just about sending messages; it's about creating bonds, offering support during tough times and sharing joyous moments with friends who understand your passion for writing and reading. It provides an avenue for users who might feel isolated in their real lives to connect with like-minded individuals across the globe.

We urge Naver Corporation and Wattpad management to reconsider their decision regarding the removal of Direct Messages from their platform. We believe that preserving this feature is crucial for maintaining the sense of community that makes Wattpad special.

Please sign this petition if you agree with us - let's show them how much we value our private conversations on Wattpad!
