Why this petition matters

Started by Julie Valadez

Ethan's Bill is a bill being worked on in the Wisconsin Legislature to be drafted, introduced, and voted on to add language to the Wisconsin Appellate code which would make any appeal of domestic abuse laws expedited in the appellate court.

Ethan is a citizen of Wisconsin who as a minor had his rights and well being compromised under an unlawful family court order that gave custody of him to the domestic abuser in direct violation of Wisconsin statutes and placed him increasingly with the abuser he was reporting being abused by during the duration of the appeal. He had to wait from June 2020 when the appeal was filed until December 29, 2021 until the order from the appellate court reversed the unlawful order. Even upon remittitur the courts refused Ethan the relief the law required and that which he was diligently asking for.

Therefore support for this bill is support to add needed language to the Wisconsin appellate code that puts into law that appeals of domestic abuse laws require being expedited for the safety of survivors at risk during the duration of the appeal.
