Understanding Our Differences has fostered an inclusive Newton through our disability awareness education programs for 3-5 graders for 45 years. UOD is a change agent, encouraging children to be inclusive, accepting, and acting as allies to people with differences. By reaching children before they have formed strong stereotypes, we help them see the value in embracing differences, including their own. These positive attitudes carry into the family and community, conveyed also by our scores of dedicated parent volunteers.

Again and again, people tell us how much of a positive difference we have made in the classroom and greater Newton community. People with disabilities tell us children greet them and interact comfortably, instead of crossing the street to avoid them. Teachers in inclusion classrooms appreciate the introduction UOD provides to open conversations about disabilities that improve classroom culture and reduce bullying. Parents say their children remember and act on UOD lessons into adulthood, as they become employers, colleagues, and friends.

As an independent nonprofit organization, we depend on a yearly grant from the Newton Public Schools to deliver our programs in all 15 elementary schools.  While our contribution from Newton is only .01% of the city budget, it has been axed because of the failure of the override to pass.  I ask the School Committee, the Superintendent, and the Mayor to reinstate the funding for Understanding Our Differences now, so Newton can continue to be a model inclusive community.
