Save Canadian Children! Regulate Button Batteries in Canada
The Issue
Did you know that common household products could be deadly for children? When swallowed, Button Batteries, found in products like remotes, toys, and jewelry, cause serious harm in as little as 2 hours.
In the esophagus, button batteries melt tissue, leading to breathing problems, infections, bleeding or even death. Even after treatment, children may still die weeks to months after leaving the hospital. These tragedies most commonly occur in kids less than 6 years old.
Despite the obvious danger of button batteries, the frequency of button battery ingestions has continued to increase. Countries like the US and Australia have made legislative changes to mandate safe packaging with warnings and regulate distribution of button batteries. The US recently passed “Reese’s Law”, named after a young child, Reese, who passed away following button battery ingestion. Canada has yet to follow suit.
Approximately 3500 children in the US swallow button batteries each year.
How many more must suffer before change happens?
Help protect Canadian Children now.
